The second time I went to see Saving Private Ryan, I intended to take notes.
This turned out to be a ridiculous idea. It was half an hour before I could
drag my eyes from the screen, even though I'd seen it all once before and
knew what was coming. During this long, complicated and uninterrupted
opening sequence, in which a platoon of American soldiers crosses a Normandy
beach under fire from German machine-gunners, it is simply impossible to
look away. In these minutes, Steven Spielberg raises the cinematic depiction
of battle to a new level.
