Heartbeat Detector Big business has rarely looked as stygian and corroded as it does in this assured French thriller. Mathieu Amalric gives a bravura performance as the company psychologist uncovering sins of the past as he investigates a petrochemical boss.Persepolis Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel about growing up during the Iranian revolution gets converted into a smart, charming, occasionally shocking coming-of-age classic. The animation may look crude (basic, largely black-and-white), but it's simplicity is a virtue and the script is a model of wit and poignancy. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull It may fall way short of the original Raiders, but Steven Spielberg's belated return to the Indy franchise remains an old-school, rip-roaring adventure. Against the odds, sixtysomething Harrison Ford still convinces as the intrepid boffin, battling evil commies in the jungles of South America. In Bruges Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson are the Irish hitmen hiding out in Bruges in this sharp, hip feature debut from playwright Martin McDonagh. While the fish-out-of-water genre feels a little worn from overuse, there is a lean, tough confidence to the writing. Gleeson and even Farrell have rarely been better. Funny Games Michael Haneke remakes his 1997 shocker for the US market and the result is an icy, gripping situationist experiment. A middle-class couple (Naomi Watts, Tim Roth) find themselves terrorised by a pair of clownish sadists at their lakeside retreat. But remember: this is not a violent film about serial killers; it's a deconstruction of violent films about serial killers.
