DVD review: The Devil Came on Horseback

3 out of 5

Former US marine Brian Steidle is the central figure of this hard-hitting account of the crisis in Darfur; as part of an African Union team monitoring ceasefires in the region, he brought back eyewitness testimony and hundreds of gruesome photographs of the carnage in the region. Steidle offers detailed, ground-level viewpoint that digs behind the headlines and gesture-politics grandstanding.

From a film-making perspective, the documentary verges a little on the basic - not helped by its obvious pitch toward a US audience not especially clued up to Africa - but no one can doubt the power and conviction of its message.
